While breaking 2023 Topps Sterling baseball for you, we pulled a 1/1 cut auto of an icon! Not a legend like Babe Ruth or a modern star in Shohei Ohtani - we pulled a MUSIC icon. Wait - what? Yes, a music icon auto was in the baseball box.
We couldn't wait to rip 2023 Topps Sterling for you. This high-end baseball product contains 1 box with 2 packs. Each pack has just 1 card. Both cards are HITS! In every box you should find 1 autographed relic and 1 additional hit. We love being able to pull a hit for you.
On the front of each box is a category to clue you in on what card could be lurking in side. For example, the first box we opened was titled 2020 MLB All-Stars and the second box was titled Icons:
After pulling a nice dual-relic auto of Nolan Arenado from the 2020s MLB All-Stars box, we got the gist. We started to guess which baseball icon would be in box two. Then, this incredible moment happened:
ROY ORBISON! No, Orbison didn't pick up a bat and play MLB; this is the iconic (now we get it...) musician that gave us the song Oh, Pretty Woman! Roy gave us 22 Top 40 hits on the Billboard charts in the 1960's. He also formed the Traveling Wilburys in 1988 along with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne. Imagine a super group like that today. Congrats to Michael Piecora for taking home this 1/1 auto!
The Sterling checklist does include famous musicians, actors, and even Presidents. Yes, there are baseball immortals possible, too; there is a Babe Ruth autograph in the product! It took J5 a minute to catch his thoughts and realize that music icon autographs are possible. We even consulted our friend, Jim Ector, of Karama Records during the break. We'll still razz J5 and Mike for not knowing Roy Orbison right away, though. At the very least, you would think they have watched Pretty Woman with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Took us a while to like Jason Alexander after he played Stuckey!
This Orbison pull reminds us of the 1/1 Ray Liotta auto we pulled from Topps Heritage recently. If you want to join our next break and try for you own 1/1, we have breaks up for all sports, non-sports like Star Wars, WWF/WWE, and Pokémon. We have the most modern, newest releases and vintage going back to 1947-66 Exhibits. You can see all of our breaks here:
Listen and learn, J5 + Mike:
