Breaking a 1952 Bowman Baseball Pack with Geoff Wilson on Sports Card Investor

Written by Monte Jennings | Aug 19, 2022 2:13:37 AM

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Geoff Wilson of Sports Card Investor live at the National to open a rare 1952 Bowman baseball card wax pack! Watch the video to see the story of a pack seeing the light of day for first time in 70 years and what we pulled.

How rare was this sealed pack of 1952 Bowman baseball cards? PSA has only graded 16 packs from 1952 Bowman baseballWhen it comes to the National, we go big or go home. We took one pack off the pop report and broke it with Geoff Wilson of Sports Card Investor. Could we repeat the magic of the 2018 National when we pulled a Mickey Mantle from a 1955 Bowman baseball cello pack?

While we didn't pull a Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays card, we still unearthed highly-coveted cards to add to the PSA set registry. For a collector looking to complete a high-grade set of 1952 Bowman cards, each card from this pack offers not just that but also has undeniable provenance. Few, if any other cards on the PSA registry will have a known origin; those cards could have changed hands a 100 times. Each card from this pack you see here can be traced back to this exact moment.

Here are the current known totals for PSA-graded cards from the pack:

  • Joe Astroth #170 = 186 graded
  • Walt Dropo #169 = 195 graded
  • Preacher Roe #168 = 299 graded
  • Bob Avilla #167 = 193 graded
  • Bobby Adams #166 = 227 graded
  • Saul Rogovin #165 = 193 graded

Each card has under 300 known graded cards! The Bob Avilla card may receive the highest grade and the projected grade would be a 9 off-center. Currently, there are ZERO cards graded 9 OC. Of all the 193 graded Avilla cards, there are 6 graded PSA 9 (with perfect centering) and only 1 PSA 10 that exists.

Opening this pack was historic; there are now only 15 authenticated and graded packs left known on the PSA population report. So, how do we top this break? You'll find out next year at the 2023 National! ...and there I hope to eat some gum.

We have spots in a 1962 Topps cello baseball pack on the site right now! If you're into pack-fresh, vintage cards like you saw in the break above, we have your shot at a Lou Brock rookie card or All-Star cards of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays here:
