The 2023 Topps Series 2 baseball cards are finally in your hands! If you ripped packs of the flagship release today and you're not quite sure if you've landed a super short print (SSP), we have a guide to identifying those coveted inserts.
Here is the BASE version of the Shohei Ohtani series 2 card in the picture above. Ohtani is at the dish in this card, looking like he just raked one of his 34 homers last season. Shohei is rocking the Angels' City Connect jersey in this card, too. In the corner you can see the image of the two-way superstar giving us a great smile. We mentioned this is a BASE card, but how do we know this for certain? Let's review how you can spot the short prints in 2023 Topps Series 2
Topps completely deviated away from how they've always handled short prints this year! In previous years, you could flip the card over and look at the code on the bottom of the card. Here is the code found on the back of the Ohtani card - the little bitty numbers all the way at the bottom:
That Code # will be different for Short Prints and base cards. Cards that end in #904 are BASE cards. Cards that end in number #924 are SSP cards.
Topps is making it so much easier on our eyes this year to spot the SSPs now, though. No need to shine your phone flashlight on the card and squint to see if you've pulled an SP. Take a look at the FRONT of the card above. You can see that the Topps logo in the upper right of the Ohtani card is SILVER. The short print cards will be GOLD. If you turn the card over, right above the number, you'll also see the letters SSP. So. Much. Easier. The new name for the SSP cards are "Golden Mirror Image Variation" cards.
Topps Tweeted a photo of the Julio Rodriguez SSP from Series 1. You can see the Gold logo on the front and the SSP above the numbers HERE.
Our eyes thank you, Topps!
The odds of finding an SSP variation are as follows:
