The 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Card Short Print and Variations Guide

Written by Mario Morales | Feb 18, 2022 3:01:40 AM

The much anticipated release of 2022 Topps Baseball is finally upon us. For months, you have marked February 16th on your calendar and now the countdown is over. While the excitement for this year’s Topps flagship product is due to the inclusion of Wander Franco’s true rookie card, you will also be on the hunt for variation cards that feature stars, rookies and all-time greats of the game. Just like previous years, the short prints (SP), super sport prints (SSP), and Ultra Short Prints (USP) will be hot commodities, but without an official checklist to look through, how are we to know which ones are the variations? Well, Vintage Breaks has you covered.

How to Spot 2022 Topps Series 1 Variations

Long-time collectors with a keen eye may be able to recognize a variation by the photography alone such as Andrew McCuthen’s 2020 Topps Series 2 SP where he was looking cool in a throwback Phillies uniform, bandana, and shades while holding a cup from a 70’s coffee vending machine or Mike Trout’s 2021 Topps Series 1 SSP that shows him wearing a mask. But the sure-fire way to spot a variation is to look at the back of the card.

When you turn over the card, look at the bottom and you will find in bold: CODE# followed by a series of numbers. All you will have to look for are the last three digits to determine whether or not you have a variation. The three digits to look for are as follows:

  • Base cards will end in #543
  • Short Prints will end in #560
  • Super Short Prints will end in #561
  • Ultra Short Prints will end in #562

The odds of finding a variation are as follows:

Hobby Packs

  • SP - 1:112
  • SSP - 1:3,341

Jumbo Packs

  • SP - 1:34
  • SSP 1:1,018

Retail Packs

  • SP - 1:98  and 1:112 blaster packs
  • SSP 1:2,992  and 1:3,342 blaster packs
